Siberian Huskies are a breed that have completely stolen our hearts. We chose this breed after several years of research & have never looked back. This breed has owned us now for many years. Although Siberian Huskies are extremely striking to look at you MUST have done some research into the specific needs this breed requires. They are NOT a breed for everyone & choosing this breed must not be taken lightly. They are extremely special to own but are not a breed suited to everyone's lifestyle or living arrangements. They also love to be with you so if you are wanting an outside dog that is not going to be a part of your family then this breed may not be for you. Siberian huskies make excellent companions for people who understand and meet their unique needs. With a lifespan average of 12yrs old a Siberian husky can be a valuable member of your family for a long time.
Some main points for consideration:
Living Conditions
A house with a large, fenced yard is best for this breed, as long as you don't care about your lawn or garden -- these dogs dig.
Exercise
Siberian huskies have a ton of energy, need daily exercise and can make great workout buddies. If you don’t have a large yard where the dog can run, plan on walking or jogging with him every day, but go easy during warm weather.
Preparing the Yard
Before you bring home a Siberian husky, thoroughly escape-proof your yard, because this breed likes to roam and explore. You should have a fence that's at least six feet high, solidly built, with wire or concrete barriers below the fence to prevent the dog from digging out.
Preventing Escape
Never let a Siberian husky off-leash at the park or during a walk, because they are likely to run away. This doesn't mean they are disloyal or dislike you; the breed simply enjoys exploring and roaming around. In saying this it is POSSIBLE to train a Siberian Husky BUT there will always be that chance that they may not come back.
Optimal Climate
Siberian huskies do well in cool climates but can become uncomfortable and even dangerously ill in heat. If you live somewhere hot, provide plenty of shade outside and have effective air-conditioning inside. During the summer, you may need to exercise your dog early in the morning or late in the evening, or find ways to challenge their body and mind indoors.
Shedding
Because of their thick fur (double coat), Siberian huskies can shed a lot (blow their coat), especially in warm climates and seasons. At least twice a year, they can spend several weeks or more shedding very heavily. Plan on vacuuming frequently, brushing your dog at least daily and sharing your home with clumps of fur.
Leadership
Siberian huskies have been bred to work with a leader. You need to be that leader, or else the dog will take over. Training and obedience classes can help you establish a wonderful & rewarding relationship with each other. If you can’t provide consistency and clarity in your training a Siberian husky probably isn’t the dog for you.
Other Pets
Siberian huskies have such strong predatory instincts with smaller pets -- such as cats, birds, rabbits and ferrets -- these often aren’t safe sharing a home with them. This again is not always the case & some are known to live with birds in cages & cats. But be aware that there will always be a prey drive in this breed. If it runs or fly's they will possibly chase & most likely catch what they were after. Siberian Huskies can get along well with other dogs but it varies by individual & how well you socialize them.
Temperament
Siberian huskies are friendly, playful, intelligent and easily bored. If you and your partner are away from home for extended periods a day, you might do better with a different breed. Siberian Huskies can be destructive and overly hyper when they don’t get enough activity. They might also howl if they feel neglected. Because they're so friendly and rarely bark, they're not usually good guard dogs lol.
Appetite
With their high energy, you might think Siberian huskies eat a lot -- but you'd be wrong. In fact, you might be surprised at how little food they need. This of course is dependent on the amount of exercise they are doing. We believe in a balanced raw diet & follow the 80% 20% philosophy.
NOTE: This information is not to frighten you away from this magnificent breed, If you are willing to give them what they need they will return an unconditional love like no other & will guarantee to make you laugh & smile even on a very dark day.
CRATE TRAINING: All dogs love a crate. It is their safe place, a place they can go to have their time alone, to sleep in at night, to have a treat. A crate trained dog is by far the best dog. Do not believe for one second it is cruel. We need to drag our's out of their crates. Think about this..what happens if your dog needs to stay at a vet, or they injur themselves & need complete rest, or you need to fly somewhere. How are all these scenario's handled?? (In a CRATE!!) So if your dog is crate trained no matter what pops up their is no stress on them. Their crate should be a happy place & never used for punishment or time out!
Just a little poem we love (Author Unknown)
As long as forever
I will stay by your side
I'll be your companion your friend and your guide
As long as you live & as long as you care I'll do anything I'll go anywhere
I'll bring you the sunshine I'll comfort your fears
I'll gather up rainbows to chase all your tears
As long as forever my heart will be true
For as long as I live I will always love you
